Carving Carrara marble is not just a skill—it’s an initiation. Our course invites you to experience sculpture in the very birthplace of this ancient craft, working with the same white marble chosen by masters like Michelangelo. Whether you are taking your very first step or looking to refine an existing practice, we offer a deeply personalized journey into the language of stone.
Whether you bring your own creative vision or choose one of our classical models, you’ll experience:
Authentic Renaissance-era practice – techniques passed down generation to generation, preserved here in Carrara.
Hands-on mastery – from initial roughing-out to the final polish, feeling the marble yield under each tool.
Cultural immersion – visit local quarries, trace the journey of marble from the mountain to your studio block.
Sensory engagement – the echo of hammer on stone, the scent of fresh dust, and the gleam of your emerging sculpture.
Personal fulfillment – create a lasting work of art to take home, a tangible memento of your Italian adventure.
This course is designed for those who are approaching marble for the first time, with or without prior sculptural experience.
You will work exclusively by hand, using traditional tools—mallet, chisel, tooth chisel, rasp—to shape your own small-scale project.
The focus is on learning the fundamental steps of stone carving, in a slow, mindful rhythm that connects your gesture to the material.
Depending on your chosen duration (from a single day to several weeks), you will be guided through all key stages of the process:
Reading and choosing the marble block
Transferring the reference (image, drawing or model)
Roughing out the form
Refining volumes and lines
Surface treatment and final hand polishing
You may choose to:
Work from a simple classical model from our collection (such as an eye, mouth, ornamental relief),
or create a personal piece starting from your sketch, a photo, or a clay maquette.
This is not just a technical introduction: it’s a hands-on, sensorial, and artistic immersion into one of the oldest sculptural practices on Earth.

You may bring your own concept—starting from a sketch, a 3D model, a digital rendering, or a previous clay work—or choose from one of our intermediate or advanced plaster models (anatomical details, busts, torsos).
You’ll be supported in:
Scaling and translating complex forms
Improving your carving logic and technical decisions
Exploring light, surface, and tension in your volumes
Refining your visual language as a sculptor
Advanced participants may also:
Integrate pneumatic or electric tools for roughing and detail work (upon request)
Learn about material economy, chisel sharpening, and long-term project planning
Engage with compositional and anatomical strategies beyond simple reproduction
This level is designed to deepen your sculptural vision, challenge your assumptions, and give you the space—and stone—to evolve.
